The history of Clancy & Clancy Insurance starts with Cummin Clancy. He was an officer in the Garda Siochana, Ireland's National Police Force in Dublin, when he represented Ireland in the 1948 Olympics. He threw the Discus. It was there that he met Jumbo Elliot, the Track and Field Coach of the American Olympic Track team and the Villanova University Track team. Jumbo Elliot was considered to be one of the greatest coaches of all time. He offered Cummin a scholarship to Villanova University and that set Cummin on the road to athleticism, business and personal success in America, a country he loved dearly.
After working with General Motors' insurance management program, he moved to New York, and started working with Travelers as the Cummin M. Clancy Insurance Agency in 1956. He was primarily selling Life Insurance. As he grew his agency; he diversified the insurance products he was selling and in 1971 incorporated a new agency with his wife and partner Maureen. Together, they started Clancy & Clancy Brokerage, Ltd. The agency has as been located on Seventh Street in Garden City since 1960. In 1984, their daughter Maura left the hotel industry to join the family insurance business and now is the President of the agency. Her mother, Maureen Clancy, is the Chief Financial Officer. Cummin Clancy past away in 2013 at the age of 90 and left a strong legacy in his agency of professionalism, customer service and commitment to his community.
Maura was the oldest of Clancys. She graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in 1977. She started her career in hotel sales with Loews Corporation and then moved to the family business. She like her father was committed to the independent insurance agency community. She was elected President of the Nassau County Independent Insurance Agents Association and then the President of the NYS Big "I" Association. She was the first woman to serve in those positions. She also served as the President of the Travelers National Personal Lines Agents Council and was a member of the Merchants Insurance Agents Council as well. She served on the Board of IFNY (Insurance Federation of New York) and on the MVAIC (Motor Vehicle Accident Indemnification Corp.) as the NYS Financial Services Department's Public Member.
Maureen is the co-founder of Clancy & Clancy Brokerage, Ltd. She graduated from Rosemont College in 1953 and still works every day. She was just awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters at the 2019 Commencement Ceremonies for her trailblazing work in the business worldthe not for profit world and in her community. She has served on the Boards of NYCB (a bank with over $5B in assets), NYU Winthrop Hospital, the Board of Trustees of Garden City, Garden City Chamber of Commerce, RotaCare, Mineola Garden City Rotary Club and has been recognized by all of them for her outstanding contributions to each them. Among her many awards, she had been recognized by the NYS Assembly and the NYS Senate as a "Woman of Distinction" and by the Nassau County Girl Scouts with their highest honor, the Juliette Low Award.
